Pretty much unnoticed we passed the half way point of our Big Adventure a few days ago. Six months on the road with our little world traveler! And what’s even better… we have another six months to go!

So far:
We traveled by plane, train, car, bus, boat, motorcycle, scooter, horse carriage and becak,
visited 5 countries,
went to 16 destinations,
took 11 flights,
and stayed in 20 hotels, apartments and bungalows and 1 night on a boat.

One of our first times on the motorbike with the three of us in Sanur, Bali

For Jace there were a lot of ‘firsts’:
first time swimming in the ocean in Dahab
first time sleeping in a hotel
first time on the metro in Kuala Lumpur
first time on a motorbike on Bali
first time he celebrated his birthday abroad
first time seeing a temple and a buddha statue
to name only a few…

Our little world traveler celebrated his second birthday in Amurang, North Sulawesi

Some of our own highlights:
Mau’s brother Robin coming to visit his little nephew (and us…) in Dahab for 10 days
House exchange with DigitalNomad.nl family in Sanur, Bali and having our own private pool
Meeting our friend Tracey again in Sanur and being her neighbour for two weeks in Amed
Discovering and exploring a huge empty temple complex we found on the way from Sanur to Ubud when we were on a scooter trip
Preparing offerings together with our hostess’ mother at our homestay in Ubud, Bali
Attending a big cremation ceremony of the village priest in Ubud, Bali
Watching a Barong Dance performance on Nusa Lembongan. They called it ‘trance dance’. Little did we know that lots of people in the audience would actually be going into trance and had to be restrained by local priests.
Celebrating Jace’s second birthday at Sendowan Baru guesthouse in Amurang, North Sulawesi
Being able to observe a big group of black macaques in Tangkoko NP in North Sulawesi from only a few steps away
Being able to dive together on Bunaken, because the Dutch owner of the resort offered to babysit Jace
Spending a night on a boat in Halong Bay, Vietnam
Riding from Nha Trang to Dalat in Vietnam on a motorcycle

And some more general things we love about this trip:
being able to spend so much time together as a family
discovering new places together
watching Jace try loads of different types of food and loving most of them
meeting lots of new and inspiring people
being outside so much and seeing Jace run around and play with everything he finds
watching our little boy grow and learn and seeing him so at ease wherever we are

Of course it’s not always easy. Like all young parents we struggle with raising a very active and stubborn toddler, but we’ve added an extra hurdle by doing it while traveling. Also we’re still adjusting to this new way of traveling as a family. If you’ve read our post about traveling with a child, you’ve noticed that there’s quite a few things that change when it’s not just the two of you anymore. That being said, we’ve had so many amazing experiences, met so many fantastic new people and seen so many great places, we wouldn’t have missed that for the world!

Jace is generally a very happy child and it’s a lot of fun to watch him discover all these new places, new people, new tastes, new animals… He smiles a lot and is constantly running around checking out his new environment. He loves to go exploring with us We know he won’t actually remember this trip, but we hope this sense of discovery, the idea that anything is possible, all the impressions he gets and the foods he tastes will stay with him when he grows up.

We’re very much looking forward to our next 6 months on the road!

We finally did what we talked about A LOT and never thought we would do on this trip. We drove a motorcycle from Nha Trang to Da Lat with an Easy Rider tour! We really didn’t think this was possible with a toddler and we’re so very happy we did it anyway. It was a gorgeous ride and all three of us had a really good time. The Vietnam Easy Riders have been around for a long time and their tours are legendary. If you get a chance, don’t miss out on discovering Vietnam by motorbike!

The total ride is about 140km, so very doable in just one morning. As you travel from sunny and hot Nha Trang into the mountains you can feel the air around you getting cooler. Dalat lies 1800m above sea level, so pretty high up in the mountains. It’s a beautiful scenic ride, with spectacular views along the way. To ride on those mountain roads with the wind blowing in your hair gives you this amazing sense of freedom!

Our little world traveler had a really good time on the ‘momo’ (his word for motorcycle)

Easy Riders, an option with small kids?

We’ve rented smaller motorbikes or scooters quite a few times already during this trip (like when we were in Cat Ba Island), but we never really used one to travel from one city to the other. Usually, we just drive our bike around for a few hours in the morning and be back in our hotel by the time Jace needs to go to sleep. Since we all enjoy our motorbike trips so much, Mau and I talked about what a shame it was that we never traveled longer stretches by motorbike before Jace was born. Especially in Vietnam, there are many people traveling north to south from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City or south to north from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi by motorbike. We thought for sure that with all the luggage we were hauling around this time it wasn’t an option for us.

South East Asia by bike

We met many people who traveled parts of South East Asia and especially Vietnam by bike and read about all the Easy Rider outfits. Which made us think about it even more. You can easily spend 3 weeks in Vietnam, or a lot longer if you like. There is just so much to see and the food is amazing. If you’re interested in reading about other destinations in Vietnam, check out this 2-week itinerary. An Easy Rider travel office was located around the corner from our apartment in Nha Trang. We passed it one night on the way to dinner and thought it couldn’t hurt to ask. It turned out they could just send our luggage by bus, while we traveled by bike. And that taking our toddler wasn’t an issue at all. Perfect!

What are the costs of an Easy Rider tour?

Obviously, traveling this way cost us more than if we’d just traveled by bus. But we really wanted to do this and were willing to spend a bit more for the experience. Just to show the calculation: for an aircon bus we would have paid $9 each, so $27 total. For this 5-hour motor trip we paid $45 each, but didn’t have to pay for Jace, so $90 total, plus $10 for transporting our luggage, so $100 in total. Ouch…

Beautiful scenery along the way

Amazing experience

But it was an amazing experience, so totally worth the money. The three of us had one bike, just like we normally do when we drive a scooter. Mau driving and me on the back with Jace in the back carrier. Our guide Steven (pretty sure that’s not his official Vietnamese name) drove with a Polish lady on the second bike. She booked a one-day round trip, so would go back to Nha Trang the same day, whereas we would stay in Da Lat. It worked out perfectly. Because of Jace we didn’t want to stop too much on the way over for all the usual activities they had planned (like a rice noodle making facility, a traditional mat weaving demonstration, a visit to a minority village etc.) but because she would take the same route when returning to Nha Trang, she could see all this on the way back.

Our guide Steven with his Polish passenger

The start of our trip

We left Nha Trang around 8:30 in the morning, stopped for a drink and some fruit for Jace around 10:00 and then again for lunch at 12:00. By lunchtime we were only about 30km from Dalat. Unfortunately, while we were having lunch it also started to rain. Not just a little rain, but what can easily be described as a downpour. Since we were already pretty high up in the mountains at that point it was quite chilly as well. And it kept raining and raining… We finished lunch, waited for a while, but the rain really didn’t stop and we had to continue.

When we were high enough the clouds touched the mountains, giving them this mysterious appearance.

Rain, rain and more rain

Steven, our guide, brought rain suits and ponchos and we created a little poncho for Jace out of a big plastic bag. With his poncho on and Steven’s motorcycle jacket tied around his shoulders, Jace was actually quite snug and comfortable on my back. So comfortable in fact, that about 15 minutes after we hit the road again he fell asleep! He didn’t wake up until we reached Dalat. Lucky him In the mean time we were struggling a bit with driving in the rain. There were little rivers crossing the road and a rapidly running and overflowing orange mud streams along the side. It was quite an experience!

A quick stop for a picture of this breathtaking view

Another one of that magnificent view point

Reaching our destination: Dalat

By 14:00 we were at our destination: Dalat. Finally! We were dropped off at one of the Easy Riders drop off and pick up points in the city. Our bags were supposed to be waiting for us there so that we could get a taxi to our hotel, together with all our stuff. Unfortunately our bags hadn’t arrived yet. As you can imagine, this wasn’t what we wanted to hear after we’d been in a downpour for over an hour.

Mau was soaked because his rain suit was leaking, but Jace and I were surprisingly dry. Luckily we did have our big backpack with Jace’s travel bed tied to it. So we went to the hotel, gave Jace one of my T-shirts to wear, since all his clothes were in one of the bags we didn’t have yet, took a nice hot shower and managed to get him to sleep a bit. At 17:00 we still didn’t have our bags. We asked the hotel receptionist to call the agency, and after a little while a taxi dropped our stuff. We were finally reunited with our bags!

Of course we needed at least one family pic of this momentous ride

Our verdict: Easy Riders with kids, yes or no?

So what’s our verdict? Is it a good idea to do an Easy Rider tour with kids? We say yes! The logistics could have been a bit better and we could have done without the rain, but all in all it was a fantastic experience for all three of us. We’re very happy we got to see a gorgeous part of Vietnam this way. One thing to note however (not to spoil the fun) is that you might want to check your travel insurance to see what’s covered.

Walking around your senses get attacked with so many smells, sights and sounds, you’re on complete overload. The streets are incredibly busy. Motorbikes weaving in and out of traffic, cars trying to find their way around all of the motorbikes, tourists on foot trying not to be overrun by motorbikes… I’m sure by now you get the idea… motorbikes everywhere. There’s a nice big sidewalk, but it’s not actually meant for walking, it’s really just one big parking space for motorbikes.

The first day we felt a bit overwhelmed by it all, but every day it got a bit easier and Hanoi really grew on us. There’s so much to do in Hanoi and I can actually see the appeal of Hanoi for expats who want to move to Vietnam! It was a challenge using the buggy for Jace, a bit of an obstacle course really. But we were happy we brought it. With all the traffic and his two year old ‘I can do it all by myself, you don’t have to hold my hand anymore’ attitude, it wasn’t safe to let him walk. Between the stroller and the carrier we managed to keep him contained and safe.

Things to do in Hanoi with kids

Once we got used to the insane traffic we really enjoyed Hanoi. It’s a fun city to discover on foot and there’s so much to see while just wandering around. The vibe in the Old Quarter is really cool and we were happy we decided to stay in this part of the city. We came back to Hanoi a few times, first after our Halong Bay cruise and then again to catch a flight to Sri Lanka via Kuala Lumpur. Each time we started to like the city better. So, what did we do while we were there?

Visit the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre

On of the ‘must sees’ in Hanoi is a traditional performance at the water puppet theatre. With the water hiding the puppet’s operating mechanism the puppets seem to dance across the water unaided. The traditional music is played live and really adds to the experience.

Explore Hanoi’s Old Quarter

Since we were staying there, this seems like a bit of a weird ‘thing’ to do. But actually exploring the Quarter in itself should really be on your to do list.

Go see the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

The communist vibe felt quite strongly here with all the millitary protection. The final resting place of Ho Chi Min, revolutionary and leader of the Communist Party is an important monument in Hanoi. It’s definitely an interesting place to visit.

Go shopping at Dong Xuan Market

You can easily get lost in Hanoi’s largest indoor market Dong Xuan. Housed in a four-story building there are vendors in all nooks and crannies. If you need anything, from fresh produce to electronics, handbags, fabrics, souvenirs, you’re sure to find it here and at a great price too.

Enjoy the Hanoi Weekend Night Market

The night market is a lively affair, with great food, a nice vibe and products ranging from cheap Chinese to lovely handcrafted items. It runs all across the Old Quarter, from Hang Dao Street to Dong Xuan Market.

Photos of Hanoi

Since we’re a bit at a loss for words to describe the Hanoi vibe, here’s a random series of photo’s we took while we were there. Hopefully, this gives you a bit of an idea what this crazy city is like.

They asked 100k but when we said that we could rent one down the street for 80k they easily agreed to the same price. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a great bike. After a bumpy ride around the island, we discovered the bike had a flat back tire. As storm clouds were gathering, Mau dropped me and Jace at a shelter at the entrance of Cannon Fort and drove back to the hotel to get another bike. He was back just in time to shelter from the massive downpour. We had picked up some sandwiches along the way and had a nice picnic while it was raining cats and dogs around us. When the rain stopped we visited the Cannon Fort.

Cheapest way to get from Hanoi to Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba Island seemed like an interesting place to stay for a few days, but it turned out it was quite expensive to get there. The combination of private car and speedboat was just as expensive as booking a 3 days/2 nights budget tour to Halong Bay with one night on a boat and one night on Cat Ba island for the three of us. Not many people know this, but if you book a Halong Bay cruise, you can choose to stay on Cat Ba Island after the second night and return whenever you wish with the same tour. One of the booking agents told us about this and so that is what we decided to do. We wrote a separate post about our Halong Bay experience.

Our pictures of Cat Ba Island

Since we were traveling with our toddler, we only saw a small part of what the island has to offer. There are actually many things to do on Cat Ba Island. We hope to go back one day! Here are some of our favorite pictures we took during our Cat Ba Island tour.

As I watch our son sleep in his travel bed I’m amazed by his ability to adapt. Just this morning we were in a hotel room in Hanoi, now we’re on a ship in Halong Bay. And he’s doing his afternoon nap, as if nothing has changed.

Although I couldn’t join the cave tour this afternoon because we want one of us to stay with our little boy when he sleeps, I still feel incredibly lucky to be here. The limestone formations outside are amazing and as always we feel best when we’re near or on the water.

Mysterious Halong Bay, Vietnam

When we entered Halong Bay harbor early this afternoon it was raining and it’s still overcast right now. I’m hoping the weather will clear a bit so that we’re able to fully see the beauty of this Unesco World Heritage site. But I’m not counting on it.

The overcast sky makes the rock formations in Halong Bay look very mysterious.

Golden Bay Cruises: cheap and it shows

We’re on a Golden Bay Cruise ship. At $99 per person, which Mau managed to get down to $95, it was one of the cheapest options and it shows. I think next time I need to research Halong Bay Cruises a bit better and maybe pick one from this list of Halong Bay recommendations. Our ship does not resembles any of the pictures in the fancy brochure we were shown by the lady of the travel agency. But even though the window was leaking on our bed when it was raining earlier and the aircon is making this incredibly annoying noise now that we’re moving, the bed is comfy and the ship seems safe enough so, all in all, we’re doing pretty good. Since the power (and thus the aircon) is only on at night, I’ve opened the window and am treated to an amazing close-up view of a huge limestone formation as we noisily glide by. The overcast sky is creating this surreal atmosphere, it’s absolutely stunning.

Halong Bay cruise: great way to make new friends

Fortunately, I didn’t really miss much by not visiting the cave, but they had a good time anyway. We have a nice little group of about 10 like-minded fellow travelers on the boat. Brenton, an Australian chef who works in a mining camp, two Germans, David and Timo, a Mexican called Israel, Shu-ting, a Dutch girl with Chinese roots and a few Frenchies whose name I didn’t catch. There are 28 people in total, but there’s a big group of Israeli’s who are mostly keeping to themselves.

When Jace wakes up there’s still a bit of time to enjoy the beautiful landscape. I don’t think he really realizes where we are, but he enjoys discovering his new environment and runs around touching everything on board he can get his little hands on. Late afternoon, when we’ve anchored for the night, our guide invites us for a swim. As it’s still overcast and the water doesn’t look very inviting, I decide not to go in, but Mau is one of the first in the water. Only a few of the other guys decide to join him. They say the water is nicer than it looks.

One of our fellow traveler kindly offered to take our picture.

A restless night on board

Dinner is pretty good and we have fun at the table. The Aussie, Brenton, is entertaining Jace with some ‘magic’ tricks. You can tell he has some young nieces and nephews After dinner I luckily managed to get Jace to sleep pretty fast. Guess it’s been a busy day for him as well. And I get to sit in the common room a bit. Even though I’m not joining the drinking games it’s still good to be among other people for a while. The beer is flowing freely so we’ll see how everyone is doing tomorrow morning at 7 for breakfast… I decide to go to bed early, but our little world traveler is a bit restless after all and wakes up every 15 minutes until his daddy comes to bed too at 1 o’clock. Jace sleeps fine after that, but Mau and I are stressing about how and where to continue our trip and don’t get a lot of sleep.

As night falls over the mooring area where we will spend the night you can hear music coming from all the ships. There were at least 10 more ships besides ours.

Disappointing morning on our Halong Bay Cruise

Even though the drinking games went on until about 1 at night, surprisingly almost everyone makes it down for breakfast in time. Unfortunately, breakfast isn’t nearly as good as lunch and dinner and leaves us a bit hungry and disappointed. The same goes for the promised kayaking. After hearing we only get to use the kayak for about 30 minutes, it hardly seems worth the trouble. They’re on a pretty strict schedule and at 9:00 everyone is checked out and dragging their luggage to the smaller boat that will ferry us back to shore. We all thought we would get to cruise around Halong Bay a bit more in the morning but apparently, we were all misinformed.

Rain on Cat Ba Island

We’re put on a bus for a trip to Cat Ba National Park, but by the time we get there it’s raining so hard the 2-hour trekking to the top gets canceled and we go to the Hospital Cave instead. Nice, but not really worth it if it’s not part of a package deal. The afternoon program consisted of a trip to Monkey Island, but Jace needed to sleep and the sun still isn’t out. We’re happy we’ve decided to stay a few days longer on Cat Ba Island, so we might get another chance to do the trekking and see the spectacular view of Halong Bay that you see in all the brochures. Hopefully, the weather clears a bit in the coming few days.

Halong Bay cruise with kids?

This was our first organized tour with Jace and it actually went pretty well. It was great to see the other people on the tour respond positively to Jace and heartwarming that they all helped carry our luggage off the boat so we didn’t have to struggle so much. We did miss a few things because the little guy needed to nap, but we didn’t really mind. Of course, it pays to get good information about the exact schedule of the tour so that you can check if it fits your child’s routine. We did learn that being really Dutch (let’s confirm the stereotype!) and finding the cheapest option isn’t always the smartest move while traveling with kids. Although, we’re very proud of ourselves for having done this! The boat wasn’t great, but we rolled with it and had a great time. Would we recommend a Ha Long Bay Cruise with kids? Yes, definitely!
