It’s a lively place, especially in the Lighthouse area, but the food isn’t spectacular. Although it has become a lot better over the years, most of the restaurants offer almost the same menu of (more or less badly) imitated European food and one or two Egyptian dishes. The great news is… there are some hidden gems out there. Our own holiday house has a fully equipped kitchen, so we often cook our own food. But we’ve been to Dahab many times and tried out a lot of the restaurants by now. And we’re here to give you some tips for good food!

1. Jackies, boulevard near the Bridge

Lovely Mexican restaurant. Unlike many places in Dahab, here it all ‘fits’, from the interior to the nice salsa music and the nice Mexican food.

2. Kitchen Express, just before you enter Lighthouse area

Very affordable and tasty Asian food. Only a few tables, but set between other small restaurants in an area that almost resembles a food court (although it’s on a street that cars can enter) the atmosphere is really nice.

3. Boxmeal, near lighthouse

Lovely small restaurant that serves Asian food. Very popular among expats. From fried noodles and fried rice to chicken teriyaki and spicy noodle soup. You can find Boxmeal on the road from Eel Garden to Lighthouse, close to, but not on the boulevard. The menu doesn’t offer too many options, but the food is tasty. We love the atmosphere with the nice wooden decorations. If you’re lucky you can sit upstairs.

4. YumYum Falafel, Mashraba

The best place in Dahab to get a falafel sandwich, and one of the cheapest. During lunchtime, you’ll find the terrace full. Locals and tourists alike love the authentic and affordable Egyptian food served here.

5. GreenValley, boulevard near Lighthouse

GreenValley (oppposite GreenValley hotel) is another one of those hidden gems. We love that they still have some bedouin style sitting areas, with cushions and low tables. The food is really good and the appetizers are a really nice gesture. Try the chicken shish from the barbecue, you won’t be disappointed!

Shish Tawook – our favourite dish on the boulevard

6. Al Sharkawy, Assalah Square opposite Ghazala supermarket

A great local place for a quick lunch or dinner. The grilled or bbq chicken is accompanied by some bread, rice and a choice of salad, white beans, zucchini or potato. The BBQ kofta is also very good. Basic meals, but tasty and great value.

Lovely dinner with family & friends at Al Sharkawy in Assalah Square

Typical grilled chicken dinner in Assalah

7. Namaste, on Fanar Street near Lighthouse

Great Indian restaurant. It’s not much to look at and it’s not on the boulevard, but the food is amazing and the prices fair.

8. Athanor, near Lighthouse

In the old days Italian owned Time Cafe on the boulevard made the best pizza’s and of course there’s Dai Pescatori, but I think Athanor actually makes a pretty decent pizza nowadays. They’re very quick to deliver too.

9. Churchill’s Bar

If you’re looking for a great burger, this is the place to go. We love the chill atmosphere on the roof terrace. They call themselves ‘sports bar’ but it’s not really a sports bar as we know it. Although they do sometimes show major soccer matches upstairs, mostly you’ll have to make do with a small tv downstairs. The upstairs is not very suitable for very small kids, it’s quite dark and the fence has large gaps.

10. Friday Market, Sheikh Salem House near Eel Garden

The Friday market is mostly a food market, with some jewelry and other crafts stalls thrown in. A surprising number of westerners sell their wares on the market. A nice place to find some different kinds of foods, from Egyptian mahshi to German torte and Italian lasagna. The food can be a bit overpriced, but the atmosphere is nice.

Whether they’ve lived there, worked there or just visited for a holiday, everyone loves Dahab. And with good reason! Read on and we’ll tell you exactly why Dahab should be on your bucket list.

Even though we generally visit places only once (because there simply are too many on our bucket list…), Dahab is a place we keep coming back to. So much so, that since 2012 we have our own place here. Sinai Sun Villa Dahab is for rent via Airbnb. We’re not in Dahab year round but we’ve been coming here since 2005. I guess that kinda makes us locals. We often get asked ‘is Egypt safe?’. Well… like lots of places worldwide some areas are and some areas aren’t. But Dahab is definitely safe, even for female solo travelers! “You driving to work everyday is a riskier roll of the dice than a visit to Dahab” as our friends from Once Upon A Backpack explain in their Dahab travel guide.

10 reasons to visit Dahab, Egypt

Whether you’re interested in Egypt’s history, just want a relaxing sun-filled holiday or want to cross diving in the famous Red Sea off your bucket list, there are many places to visit in Egypt. The Pyramids, Luxor, Abu Simbel, The Nile Delta, Hurghada… Somehow Dahab rarely ends up in this list, which is a shame as it’s one of the best places to visit in Egypt (of course, we’re biased ;-)). Here are 10 reasons why.

Dahab weather: 365 days of sunshine

In Dahab the sun always shines. There might be a few days a year when it’s a bit overcast and if were lucky there’s rain once a year, but other than that it’s sunny all year round. Enough vitamin D for everyone! It’s important to protect yourself from the sun though but please don’t damage the reef with all those chemical ointments and use a reef safe sunscreen! Even in the wintertime when the temperature at night might drop to 10C (and all the locals are wearing warm winter coats and knit caps), it’s still warm enough to wear a t-shirt during the day.

You can ALWAYS where flipflops while in Dahab, what’s not to love?

Laid back atmosphere

Compared to the major tourist destinations in Egypt, Dahab is very relaxed. The people are friendly and willing to help wherever they can. Sure, they want you to eat in their restaurant and buy in their shop, but they’re not pushy or aggressive about it. Dahab used to be a favorite among hippie backpackers and this friendly, welcoming and laidback atmosphere is still felt today.

Dahab: the people are friendly, the sun always shines and there is plenty to do

Great for kids

Egyptians and Bedouins alike love kids. And there is plenty to do for kids in Dahab. The central Lighthouse area offers a confined sandy area where kids can swim and play in the water. Our 4-year old loved to go snorkeling there. Full face snorkel masks are becoming more popular in Dahab, but as divers we always think they look a bit silly. We prefer ‘old fashioned’ snorkel gear for our son. We’re so happy he loves the water and marine life just as much as we do! Dahab’s Laguna is a lovely sandy area which is also great for swimming and the mountains are also a great place to spend time with your kids. Kids will be amazed to see your Bedouin guide make tea and prepare food on an open fire. And in the mountains there’s ample space to run and discover. When your kids are a bit older they can try their hand at windsurfing, scuba diving or riding a quad.

Egypt is affordable

For us westerners, Egypt is still very affordable compared to home. Some luxury products are about the same price as we would pay in The Netherlands, but a taxi around town costs you less than $1 and a dinner for two with some fresh juice will set you back about $20. Excursions and activities are very affordable too, so a visit to Dahab won’t break the bank.

A daytrip to Wadi Gnai in the south of Dahab will cost you less than $10

Natural beauty

The town of Dahab is wedged in between the Sinai Desert mountains and the Gulf of Aqaba, the Northeastern arm of the Red Sea. Natural beauty both above and under the water. Just walking around town you see the impressive mountain range looming in the background. The mountains are easy to reach by taxi from Dahab, for instance at Wadi Gnai. We visited the mountains there recently and had the whole area ourselves. A fantastic experience. The underwater world of Dahab is amazing as well, like swimming in an aquarium.

From the mountains to the sea, nature in Dahab is simply stunning

Dahab diving: freediving & scuba diving

We love to dive, so destinations that offer great diving are a big plus for us. Luckily Dahab has a lot of fantastic dive sites. Practically all dives are shore dives and can be done by both novice and advanced divers. From deep diving at Blue Hole Dahab and Canyon to pristine coral reefs at Gabr el Bint, Dahab has it all. Dahab is also one of the cheapest places worldwide to get your PADI Open Water diving certification. Freedivers also love Dahab. Egypt’s Blue Hole in Dahab is easy accessible from the shore, there’s no current and it’s deep. A great place to practice your freediving skills.

Both novice and advanced divers will love discovering Dahab’s underwater world

Both active and relaxing

You can easily spend your days in Dahab on a sunbed at the beach, sipping a lovely fresh fruit juice and taking the occasional dip to cool off. In Dahab you can combine this perfectly with some more active choices. There are quite a lot of excursions you can do from Dahab and a lot of activities to choose from. A trip to St. Catherine’s monastery is one the most popular day trips from Dahab.

Windsurfers at Lighthouse

Plenty of things to do in Dahab

Scuba diving, snorkeling, freediving, swimming, kite or wind surfing, desert safaris, riding a quad, a camel or a horse, mountain climbing or camping in the desert, it’s all possible in Dahab. Really, you never have to be bored in Dahab! No problem if you’ve never done it before, there are lessons available for all levels.

What to do in Dahab? Ride a camel of course!

Live like a local

Unlike in the touristy seaside resorts in Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada, you can still experience the local lifestyle in Dahab. Accommodation in Dahab hotels and Dahab camps is available for any budget, but we prefer to rent a local house and live like a local. You’ll often find yourself in a Bedouin area, where the goats roam free during the day and you’ll be cheerfully greeted by barefooted Bedouin kids when you leave the house. Your Bedouin neighbors might even invite you for a tea!

Live like a local and be treated by goats and sheep when you exit your gate

Experience the Bedouin culture

The Sinai Bedouins have been around for a long time. Their culture is unique and Dahab is a great place to discover the Bedouin way of life. There are around 33 different Bedouin tribes in North and South Sinai. And while North Sinai continues to be an area of conflict and difficult to visit, South Sinai welcomes tourists and the Bedouins will gladly tell you about their culture. Go on a desert hike with a Bedouin guide, spend a few days camping Bedouin style under the stars or go for a lovely Bedouin dinner in the mountains. It’s well worth it!

Helping our Bedouin guide to make tea in Dahab, Egypt

Getting to Dahab

Dahab is located in the South Sinai desert, about 100km north of Sharm el Sheikh. The easiest and quickest way to reach Dahab is to take a plane to Sharm el Sheikh airport and then a taxi to Dahab (costs around $30). EgyptAir and Nile Air operate daily flights from Cairo. There are direct international flights to Sharm el Sheikh from Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Brussels (TUI) and Amsterdam (TUI). By car it takes 60-75 minutes to travel from Sharm el Sheikh to Dahab. The more budget option is to take a bus from Sharm el Sheikh to Dahab. Buses don’t operate directly from the airport, you first have to take a taxi to the bus station in town. Another option is to fly to Eilat, cross the border at Taba and take a taxi from there. It’s safest to pre-arrange your taxi and make sure it’s waiting for you at the border.

A taxi is the easiest way to get from Sharm el Sheikh to Dahab

Leaving Dahab

Unless you choose to stay in Dahab (which many first time visitors end up doing), there comes a time when you have to move on or go back home. You can reverse your route and take a taxi to Sharm el Sheikh airport, but you can also easily cross the border to Israel at Taba or go from Egypt to Jordan by ferry. The ferry to Aqaba, Jordan leaves from Nuweiba, which is about an hour away from Dahab by car. Visting Jordan is actually pretty high on our bucket list. We’d love to visit Petra and see the sand dunes at Wadi Rum.

The best time to visit Dahab, Egypt

What is the best month to visit Egypt? Our favorite periods to go to Dahab are April/May and September/October, but Dahab is a destination you can visit year round. While it’s always sunny and there’s hardly any rain, Dahab does have different seasons. The summer months, June, July, and August are REALLY hot. Too hot for us to be honest. In the winter period November – February you can still wear a short sleeve T-shirt during the day, but it gets chilly at night. Locals wear warm winter coats in this season, but we’re usually fine in jeans and a sweater. Spring and Fall are by far the best time to go to Dahab.

Dahab hotels & Dahab camps

Dahab has always been a favorite backpacking destination, and the Dahab camps offer great budget accommodation if you don’t mind the basic amenities and shared bathrooms. But also Dahab hotels are available in every price range. Airbnb is becoming more and more popular, especially among families that are looking for a Dahab apartment or a holiday house in Dahab. A lot of travelers and traveling families chose to spend the winter months in sunny Dahab.

Workations in Dahab

Great news for digital nomads. Dahab has both 4G mobile internet and some great spaces to work. Many people who go to Dahab for a short visit end up staying much longer than they intend. It’s just such a place. But the internet was always an issue. Yes, a lot of the restaurants on the boulevard offer free wifi and it’s alright when you just want to check your email or send a message home. But I always found it next to impossible to get any real work done unless you get there really early in the morning when no one is around. However, now you can have your pie and eat it, there’s 4G mobile internet and it works! Great news for all digital nomads. Dahab is definitely a place where you can stay for a while (and then stay longer…).

The longest we’ve ever been away since Sinai Sun Villa was built in 2012. After we returned from our big adventure in Asia in 2015 it took us a while to find ourselves again. But now we’re finally back in our second home in beautiful Dahab, even if it’s only for a few weeks. And we’re pretty determined to never stay away this long ever again! So what’s going on in Dahab, Egypt right now?

When we were here the last time in March 2015 there were hardly any tourists and people working in the tourism industry were suffering. After the January 25 Revolution in 2011, tourism in Egypt went to record low. Many countries issued travel warnings for Egypt and other countries in Northern Africa. Egypt’s second largest income source is tourism – the Nile Delta, the Red Sea and of course the Pyramids are some of the country’s most visited locations.

Last time we were in Dahab our little world traveler was a tiny toddler

Some of the people we knew in Dahab had to leave and go to Cairo because they couldn’t make any money in Dahab. Tourism in other parts of Egypt, such as Hurghada were recovering, but Sharm el Sheikh and Dahab were still suffering because of the continuing unrest in North Sinai. Then, when things were finally starting to look up for South Sinai, there was a terrible attack on a Russian plane in October 2015. Again many countries issued a travel warning.

Back in Dahab after two and a half years

After what seemed like an eternity we are finally back in Dahab. Because there weren’t any direct flights yet from Amsterdam to Sharm el Sheikh International Airport, we decided to take a night flight with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul to Sharm el Sheikh. Another option would have been to fly to Amsterdam to Cairo and then a domestic flight from Cairo to Sharm el Sheikh. But Turkish Airlines was the more budget-friendly choice. It was a long trip with our little world traveler. We left The Netherlands at 2 PM and arrived in Dahab at 4 AM the next day. Luckily, once again our world traveler did great and the flight went as good as you could expect. After reading the most horrible reviews of Turkish Airline, we were a bit apprehensive. But the service was actually quite good.

After the bad reviews we were pleasantly surprised by Turkish Airlines

Some upgrades in Dahab

After getting some much-needed sleep we woke up around 10AM and could finally see our house. After 2,5 years of very little maintenance, there definitely was some work to be done. In the afternoon we went out to see how Dahab was doing and to find out how much had changed since the last time we were here. We were happy to notice that the main road through Assalah (the local area where we live) had finally gotten some much needed new asphalt and the streetlights got an upgrade as well. The road had become really bad the last couple of years because it’s the main road going from Mashraba (Dahab’s main tourist center) to Dahab’s best-known dive spots like Blue Hole, Bells and The Canyon. We’re happy to see our beloved town is looking better again.

The road in front of the big mosque looks really good now!

In the last few months more and more countries are easing their travel warnings. And slowly direct flights connecting South Sinai to the rest of the world are resuming. While walking through Dahab on our way to Lighthouse and the boulevard we noticed there were less stray dogs than before. Dahab Animal Welfare, a local non-profit organization has been working for the last seven years to improve the lives of animals in Dahab. They have regular TNR (trap, neuter, release) programs. We support their efforts and hope they make life for the animals here a bit better. If you want to donate some money or maybe want to adopt a dog, visit their website or Facebook page.

We’re seeing divers, surfers and snorkelers again!

After our little walk through Assalah, we walked another 10 minutes to the Lighthouse area on the boulevard. We were surprised to see that there were quite lot of people on the boulevard, both tourists and locals. A very welcome sight! Not like 2015 when it was practically deserted. Divers, freedivers, wind and kite surfers, students doing a dive course or freediving course and others just enjoying the sun. People are starting to find their way back to our beautiful Dahab! Finally, the restaurants, shops and dive centers are starting to make decent money again. A lot of our Egyptian friends work in the diving industry, so we’re grateful to see them all working again and having fun with their customers. With the new flights arriving from Europe, we’re starting to see some ‘gold’ (Dahab means gold in Arabic) on the horizon for the city we fell in love with.

Whoop whoop! Divers at Lighthouse!

The house, a work in progress

As I said before, we need to do some maintenance on the house. In the beginning of 2016 there was an earthquake in Dahab which caused a few small cracks in some of the walls. We are getting those fixed and hope we have enough time to get a painter to paint a part of the outside of our house. The small trees we planted early 2012 are not so small anymore and apart from the mess their leaves cause in the rest of the garden, they’re now also threatening the foundation with their roots. So we had to take them out, which was quite a job.

It’s amazing how tall some trees can grow in only 5 years!

It’s fantastic that the palm trees we planted 5 years ago are doing so well. We would like to get some more color in the garden but finding the right plants to grow in the desert is not as easy as it looks. Especially in the summer, the garden needs a lot of water. I think the garden hose needs to be replaced real soon as it’s starting to have small leaks. Good quality is hard to come by in Dahab. We do have a nice cactus area in our garden which is doing great, but its al the same kind of green. Oh well… as any homeowner knows, a house is always a work in progress We’re just very happy to be back in Dahab again.

They called it ‘trance dance’. Little did we know that lots of people in the audience would actually be going into trance and had to be restrained by local priests.
Celebrating Jace’s second birthday at Sendowan Baru guesthouse in Amurang, North Sulawesi

And some more general things we love about this trip:
being able to spend so much time together as a family
watching Jace try loads of different types of food and loving most of them
meeting lots of new and inspiring people
being outside so much and seeing Jace run around and play with everything he finds
watching our little boy grow and learn and seeing him so at ease wherever we are

Of course it’s not always easy. Like all young parents we struggle with raising a very active and stubborn toddler, but we’ve added an extra hurdle by doing it while traveling. Also we’re still adjusting to this new way of traveling as a family. If you’ve read our post about traveling with a child, you’ve noticed that there’s quite a few things that change when it’s not just the two of you anymore. That being said, we’ve had so many amazing experiences, met so many fantastic new people and seen so many great places, we wouldn’t have missed that for the world!

Jace is generally a very happy child and it’s a lot of fun to watch him discover all these new places, new people, new tastes, new animals… He smiles a lot and is constantly running around checking out his new environment. He loves to go exploring with us We know he won’t actually remember this trip, but we hope this sense of discovery, the idea that anything is possible, all the impressions he gets and the foods he tastes will stay with him when he grows up.

We’re very much looking forward to our next 6 months on the road!

Somehow getting up in the middle of the night to change a dirty diaper by candlelight just doesn’t seem so appealing. So since we became the parents of a beautiful but very active little boy we haven’t been camping around Dahab. Our friends who live here go camping with their little ones all the time, but we haven’t found the energy for it yet. In the past, we always did at least one camping trip every time we were Dahab. There’s something special about sleeping under the stars… This is an article I wrote about one of our last camping trips.

Dive gear? Check! Toothbrush? Check! Sheets and blankets? Check! Toilet paper? Check! Plates and cutlery? Check! Wonder where we’re going? We’re in Dahab, Egypt and we’re going camping! Tonight we will sleep under the stars. Fantastic…

Sinai Camping Bedouin style

In Dahab you usually don’t bring a tent when you go camping, you sleep ‘beddo style’. Under the stars, just like the Bedouins. One big difference, Bedouins role themselves in a thick wool blanket (even when it’s 30C outside) and sleep anywhere. We westerners need a little more comfort, so we pull the mattresses off the upstairs sun beds and pack some sheets and blankets. We can’t be bothered to buy summer sleeping bags for such a short trip. Our Bedouin driver manages to get all our stuff in the Jeep and we’re ready to go!

Four poles and a roof

We’ve been camping around Dahab lots of times, but every time it’s a surprise where we’ll end up. This time we go South, in the direction of Gabr el Bint. Once we get to where we’re going we see a wooden shelter close to the water. It isn’t much, just four poles with a roof. ‘Home’ for the coming two nights. Eating, sleeping, making amazing dives, reading a bit, going for a walk or a swim. Getting through the day is easy and relaxed. In the evening our Bedouin friends cook a lovely dinner for us over an open fire. Fresh flatbread, rice, vegetables and fish caught that afternoon. It’s delicious. It gets dark early in the South Sinai Desert. So by the time our friends start cooking it’s already completely dark. After dinner we drink the spicy and sweet Bedouin tea we love so much. After some more stargazing, it’s bedtime. We’ve already created a sleeping space with the mattresses of the sun beds. It takes a little while to get used to the open space, but we sleep very well.

Sunrise in the desert

The Bedouins just role themselves in their blanket and lie on the beach or next to the Jeep. We’re on our thin mattresses in the area between the four poles, under the roof. Somehow it feels weird to just randomly lie down and go to sleep. Maybe it’s imaginary, but the roof seems to offer some protection. In the night you really don’t need it, but in the morning when the sun rises you understand why those little wooden structures exist. It gets dark really early, which means the day starts early too. We sleep through the sunrise but wake because of the heat. We find a way to hang the sheets we brought between the poles so we can create some shade. It’s too hot for us to be out in the sun, lounging in the shade is the better option. Or being in the water of course…

Dahab diving safari

Not only have we brought some basic camping gear, we also have our dive gear and tanks! So as soon as we wake up, it’s time to hit the water. I love early morning dives! We’re not at an official dive site and the reef here is still in great condition. No other divers around, just peace and quiet. We are careful not to disturb anything and keep the reef as pristine as before we entered. Only take memories and only leave bubbles…

Observing Bedouin lifestyle

During the day numerous bedouins pass by to have a chat with ‘our’ bedouins. Fresh fish and other foods are exchanged, they share a cup of incredibly sweet tea and then they go on their way. It’s fun to observe what they do all day. From what we can see it isn’t much. They make food, drink tea, go fishing, chat, pray and take naps. All very relaxed. For a little while we also get to enjoy this relaxed lifestyle. A great way to escape the rat race and be close to nature. We can see why many Bedouins prefer the desert over city life, even if life is Dahab is at a much slower pace than back home.

Back to Dahab

Unfortunately after two days we have to return to civilization. The only good part about it is that we will have a toilet again. For me, as a woman, it’s always slightly more uncomfortable than for the gentlemen in our group. But I don’t mind giving up my toilet if it means we get to enjoy nature that way. The stars are amazing at night in the desert…

I think next time we’ll take out little boy. I think he would also enjoy the desert very much.

Planning a trip to Dahab? Here’s 5 things you don’t want to miss out on! Dahab (Arabic for ‘gold’) is a town in the South Sinai desert. It’s a popular holiday destination for divers, wind surfers and kite surfers. But despite the many natural and cultural attractions, the town has managed to maintain its small scale and relaxed character. A great atmosphere, dusty little roads, bedouin kids playing barefoot in the street, goats and camels wandering around… this is Dahab. The natural environment is amazing, with the impressive mountains on one side and the clear blue sea on the other.

There’s a lot to do and see in Dahab, but if you’re only there for a short time these are the 5 things that you really have to experience.

1) Discover the amazing underwater world during a dive or a snorkel session
2) Accept a bedouin family’s invitation to come for tea
3) Go to Wadi Gnai for a relaxing day of swimming, sunbathing, snorkelling or diving
4) Go on a camel safari and sleep under the stars with the bedouins at Ras Abu Galum
5) Eat falafel with the locals at YumYum Falafel in Mashraba

Here’s a list of our 5 favorite dive sites

1) Canyon

Next to Blue Hole Canyon is one of Dahab’s most famous dive sites. It’s usually pretty busy, but definitely worth it. Underwater you’ll find an impressive, beautifully coral covered canyon that is created by volcanic activity a long time ago. You descend until at about 30 meters you reach the sandy bottom. Take a dive light to see all the colorful corals on the canyon walls! Tec divers can leave the Canyon via an exit at 52 meters deep.

On almost all reefs you find the Cheeky Sergeant Marjor fish

2) Islands

Islands is the most Southern dive site within the city’s checkpoints. This is one dive you definitely shouldn’t miss! The impressive reef of hard corals forms an underwater labyrinth. During the dive you get to discover this fascinating underwater landscape that looks unlike any other dive site in the area. Besides the usual reef inhabitants you will also find a big school of yellowtail barracuda’s.

Interesting underwater rock formations at Islands

3) Gabr el Bint

One of the most colorful dive sites of Dahab. You can reach it by zodiac from Wadi Gnai or, for the adventurous divers, on the back of a camel. This site is a bit more ‘off the beaten track’. Because less divers frequent this site, there is an abundance of live and beautiful hard and soft corals. The dive site is a bit further away, that’s why you normally do two dives when you go. It’s worth the effort!

Diving in Dahab is like diving an underwater aquarium!

4) Three Pools

The name of this dive sites is derived from the three naturally formed underwater ‘pools’ that you swim through at the beginning of the dive. The pools are about 4 meters deep, so it’s also a great place for to snorkel. It’s like swimming in an aquarium, with numerous colorful fish and corals You can combine this dive with a dive at Golden Blocks, Moray Garden, Caves or Umm Sid. Spend your surface time relaxing in one of the Bedouin restaurants at Wadi Gnai.

Golden Blocks, Three Pools and Um Sid are favorite dive sites in the South of Dahab. The name Golden Blocks comes from the colorful schools of Anthias that surround the coral blocks

5) Blue Hole

For its fame alone Blue Hole has to be on this list. For tech divers it’s a very interesting dive because of the Blue Hole’s depth. Fun divers will discover that there’s not a lot of life in the Blue Hole itself. A great dive however is to drift over the beautiful coral garden from El Bells to Blue Hole, ending the dive with a safety stop in the Blue Hole. While waiting at 5 meters in the blue, you will often see freedivers training along the walls. The advantage of staying in Dahab is that you can dive the Blue Hole early in the morning, before the crowd from Sharm el Sheikh arrives. Often the dive at Blue Hole is combined with a dive at Canyon.

Juvenile Star Puffer Fish posing for our camera

Bonus! Our secret favorite: Dutch Reef

At Asssalah Beach, the closest beach to our holiday house (3 minutes walk) you will find a dive site we named Dutch Reef. It’s not an official dive site, so it’s still very pristine and amazing. To enter it has to be high tide, because you have to swim about 50 meters over the reef top to get to the drop-off. It’s a bit of a swim, but well worth it! Please, only do this dive at high tide and make sure not to damage any of the coral on the reef top!

Dutch Reef, at Assalah Beach in front of our holiday house

So, these are our favorites. Feel inspired yet? Or, if you’ve been to Dahab do you agree with our choices? Which dive sites do you think should be on this list?
